The Senior Project is a very important part of graduation. Seniors next year will either be enrolling in college or working on their professional career. Because of the ever changing environment of both the academic and professional world upcoming young adults need to know how to use technology writing and presentation to get their point across. It is because of this that the senior projects goal was to have seniors pick a subject of interest to them and have them showcase their technological talents as well. The reason why I chose to make a senior project sample website was so that my senior classes understood what was expected of the project, I wanted to have examples of the layout of all the different aspects of the project, and I wanted my students to be able to succeed in their project.
First, I wanted all of my seniors to know what I expected when they worked on their project. The most important way that students can learn is by seeing and initially mimicking. If students can see a proper layout of a wikispace page they can then see how to organize it on their own. By giving exact examples the students can see what is expected of them and what I consider to be "A" work. With this ability now everyone can work knowing what the outcome should look like.
Second, I wanted the seniors to have examples of all the work that I have done and what I hold to be quality work. I never ask the students to do projects that I myself could not complete. It is important that my classes see that I am leading them by example and trying o give them the best education.I am also trying to show the students how I incorporate Communications (Multiple Media Sources) and technology (Multiple Media Tools) to give what the school does today and what the students are expected to be able to do. Working with seniors to create and showcase their work gives them a way to have ownership on not just a project but a skill that they can take with them for the rest of their lives. Being able to not just teach the content of history but also a technological skill has been highly rewarding for both me and my students.
Finally, I wanted my students to have success in the classroom with technology, historical content and presenting in my class. Although the subject of social science can be very dry and stale there are many great points that our class has been able to go into depth and discuss upon. It is because of this that I find it is important to find new ways to "liven up" material so that all students are able to come to terms with it. Building upon that an by allowing the seniors to pick their own subject allows them to enhance their learning during a time where "senioritis" has set in to almost incurable levels. The final aspect is that students need to be able to incorporate everything they need into a presentation allowing them to also work on their public speaking skills.
In conclusion, the reason why I chose to make a senior project sample website was so that my senior classes understood what was expected of the project, I wanted to have examples of the layout of all the different aspects of the project, and I wanted my students to be able to succeed in their project. Hopefully the senior classes will be able to take these skills and apply them to the working world. In the worst case scenario they may possibly just know something about social science that they enjoy. All we know is that with the continuing change of technology, more must be used in the classroom.
